The Italian Competition and Market Authority has decided that after the sale of WhatsApp by Facebook, users will be penalized on the grounds that they forfeit their personal information to Facebook.
The Competition Authority ruled that if users do not share their personal information with Facebook, they are convinced that they will not be able to continue using WhatsApp, and thus are forced to share their information. After renewing the terms of use of WhatsApp, two separate investigations were launched in Italy claiming that consumer rights were violated in 2016. At the end of these examinations, it was determined that the application "imposed" the new service conditions for the users, and "unfair" items that the company could unilaterally change to the user agreement. For this reason, the Competition and Market Authority decided to pay WhatsApp a penalty of 3 million euros.
It was stated that they will continue to work in co-operation with the Italian authorities, examining the decision made in WhatsApp.
